Lake Como Vacation & Travel with Family:
Lake Como, the third largest lake in Italy and one of the deepest lakes in Europe, is located in Lombardy, Italy. On numerous trips to visit relatives in the area, I've found it to be a fun place to take the family. Not only does it bring amazing scenery and all-round lakeside frolicking, it also packs authentic taste of Italian food and hiking opportunities.
Amazing villas and historic structures
While the count of grand Lake Como villas is quite large, some of them fall in the must-see category. Here are some of them;
- Villa Carlotta
- Villa d'Este
- Villa Melzi d'Eril
- Villa del Balbianello.
Built in 1787, Villa del Balbianello is another structure that inspires awe from the visitors with its terraced gardens.

Summer Vacation on Lake Como Italy
June is one of the best months to visit the Lake Como area of Italy. Vacationers usually don’t descend until July and August; so, you can enjoy sightseeing and shopping in the towns along its shores without any hustle bustle.
Here is link to a Forum Discussion http://www.fodors.com/community/europe/mid-july-vacation-on-lake-como-italy.cfm that might help in planning summer vacations on Lake Como Italy.
A question from fellow traveler planning stay in Lake Como area
We are a family of 4 (children aged 14 and 16). We are considering a 10-day summer vacation somewhere in Como rather than trying to join the sweaty masses on the Amalfi coast. We would like to hear about personal experiences (must see places, must do daily excursions/activities; also "what not to do") and where to stay (town and hotel). Any advice/tips about traveling to Lake Como for a summer family vacation would be greatly appreciated.
Here are some replies from experts and travelers;
REPLY 1 - As far as activities, I only took the ferry over to Mennagio. On one trip, I stayed in Varenna, but I personally like Bellagio better. I'm sure there are lots of water activities available and of course, hiking. You might like to take an overnight trip to Switzerland since you will be close. I traveled by train from Varenna to Tirano, then on the Bernina Express to Chur. Beautiful scenery!
REPLY 2 - The obvious choice would be the other lakes of that region, Maggiore and Orta. Or, train to Luzern via Lugano for at least 3 nights.
REPLY 3 - Teens would get bored. If you do go, try to find a place with a pool for them. I agree that Lake Garda has more teen centered activities, wind surfing in particular.Most of the replies give ideas that would last only for 3-4 days. Lake Como is a destination that packs more fun than that. Planning thoroughly is a must when visiting Lake Como. There are various towns and tourist destinations that deserve a watch. Make sure you cover all of them.
Rent property somewhere that is close to all the selected destinations. If you want to elevate your vacation experience, then, choose a historic villa or waterfront cottage to stay with family.
